Ouarzazate

Known as the Hollywood of Morocco, Ouarzazate sits at the crossroads of the High Atlas and the Sahara, surrounded by ancient kasbahs, palm groves, and dramatic desert landscapes.

About Ouarzazate
Ouarzazate is a desert city that feels like the edge of the world. Located south of the High Atlas Mountains, it has long served as a gateway between the mountains, the Sahara, and the fertile oases of the Draa Valley. Its dramatic landscapes, ancient fortified villages, and clear light have made it a favorite location for filmmakers from around the world.

The city itself is relatively young, built by the French as a garrison town in the 1920s. Today it is a hub for desert tourism and film production. The Atlas Film Studios, just outside town, are among the largest in the world by area and have hosted productions such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones. Visitors can tour sets and learn about the region’s cinematic history.

The real star of the region, however, is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village about 30 kilometers from Ouarzazate. This ksar, built from adobe and mud brick, rises from the desert floor like a sandcastle. It has been used as a filming location for countless movies and remains one of Morocco’s most iconic images. Walking across the riverbed and climbing to the top for sunset is an unforgettable experience.

Ouarzazate is also a practical base for exploring the south. From here, travelers can continue to the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorge, the Draa Valley palm groves, and the dunes of Merzouga. The city offers hotels, restaurants, and agencies that organize treks, 4x4 excursions, and desert expeditions. Whether you are a film buff, a history lover, or an adventure seeker, Ouarzazate is a highlight of any southern Morocco itinerary.

History & culture
Ouarzazate grew from a small desert crossing point into a French garrison town in the early 20th century, helping to control trade routes between the mountains and the Sahara. The surrounding region, however, has been inhabited for millennia. The Glaoui family, powerful Berber chiefs, built fortified kasbahs such as Taourirt to control the caravan trade. In recent decades, the city has become a global film production center, earning it the nickname "Hollywood of Morocco."
