Merzouga Desert

The gateway to the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, Merzouga offers iconic Sahara experiences including camel treks, luxury desert camps, stargazing, and Berber hospitality under endless skies.

About Merzouga Desert
Merzouga is a small village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco’s most spectacular seas of sand. The dunes here rise up to 150 meters and stretch for roughly 28 kilometers, shifting color from pale gold at noon to burnt orange and deep rose at sunset. For many travelers, arriving in Merzouga is the highlight of their Morocco journey: the landscape feels timeless, silent, and vast.

The classic Merzouga experience begins with a camel trek across the dunes. Led by local guides, visitors ride into the desert as the sun sinks toward the horizon, arriving at a Berber camp where mint tea, tagines, and live music around the fire await. Luxury camps offer private tents with ensuite bathrooms, while simpler camps provide a more rustic connection to the desert. After dark, the absence of light pollution reveals a dazzling canopy of stars.

Beyond the overnight camp, Merzouga offers a wide range of activities. Sunrise over the dunes is unforgettable, and many visitors climb the highest dune near their camp to watch the first light. 4x4 excursions visit seasonal lakes such as Dayet Srij, where flamingos and other migratory birds gather. Khamlia, a village on the edge of the desert, is home to Gnawa musicians whose hypnotic rhythms have roots in sub-Saharan Africa.

Merzouga is usually reached via a scenic drive through the Atlas Mountains, passing palm groves, ancient kasbahs, and dramatic gorges. The journey is part of the experience, with popular stops including Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, and the Todra Gorge. Whether you have two days or two weeks, a visit to Merzouga connects you to one of the world’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Today, the local Berber and Gnawa communities preserve traditions of hospitality, music, and camel herding while sharing their desert home with visitors from around the world.
